Your job should enable your life. Not define it.
You’ve made it to where you are by working hard and following your passion, but something feels off.
You just don’t feel like you fit in.
You look around and think, do I belong here?
You wonder if you’re the right type of person for academia.
You have things to say, but you’re not sure you’re saying them right.
If this sounds like you, I want you to know you’re not the only one.
Academia is a paradox. It trains independent thinkers yet expects conformity. It promotes innovation yet prioritizes legacy. Being an academic is an exercise in cognitive dissonance. It’s no wonder so many of us feel out of place.
I spent 13 years as a professor, so I understand the weird world that is academics. I lived the grinding pressure to do all the things, ideally yesterday. And I felt the compelled to do it all alone because asking for help meant I wasn’t good enough.
The truth is, you are enough. Academia needs people like you. People who speak their mind, not toe the line. People who revel in their quirks, not those who hide them. People who are who they are. People who are real.
As an academic editor, I value your perspective, your identity, and your voice. I can help you cut through the jargon and say what you want to say. I also value your time. Too tied up in course and exam prep or committee meetings to format your latest paper? I can do that too so that you can take a break and maybe even have a weekend.
How I can help:
I read your work for typos, spelling, grammar, punctuation and consistency. This does not include editing sentence structure or improving word choice.
Proofreading
I apply publisher, journal, or institution-specific styles to your manuscript, including formatting references.
Formatting
I edit your writing for clarity, cohesion, and consistency. This includes shortening and restructuring sentences and paragraphs for better flow, reducing redundancy, and ambiguity. This also includes applying journal styles and guidelines, cross referencing of figures and tables, and formatting references.
Copy Editing
Do you need something you don’t see here? I don’t just edit manuscripts. I can help with powerpoint slide decks and academic portfolios, and provide other services such as ADA compliance editing.

Rachel Dunn, PhD
I am a first-generation college student, paleontologist, former anatomy professor, and all-around weirdo with a PhD in biological anthropology. I have authored or co-authored dozens of papers in peer-reviewed journals, a book chapter, and served as an associate editor for an academic journal. I was drawn to academia by an intense curiosity and a passion for discovery that carries over into everything I do.
